On the wedding morning the groom has the least time and the most people asking for him. A little preparation the night before keeps the outfit, and you, calm. Use this as a checklist.
Lay out the night before
- Sherwani, inner kurta and churidar or dhoti, pressed and on hangers
- Dupatta or shawl, folded the way you will wear it
- Safa, with the kalgi or brooch kept separately in its box
- Mala, rings and any other jewellery
- Mojaris or juttis, tried on once with the socks you will wear
- Talwar, if you are carrying one in the varghodo
Pack a small kit
- A few safety pins of different sizes
- Handkerchief and tissues
- A comb and a small mirror
- Deodorant and lip balm
- Water and a light snack
- A phone charger, handed to a friend
Get dressed in this order
Put on the sherwani and lower first, with the buttons done. The safa comes next, so the fabric of the sherwani is not pulled after the safa is set. Then the kalgi on the safa, the mala over the sherwani, and the dupatta last, pinned at the shoulder so it stays in place.
Keep the safa comfortable all day
- Avoid taking the safa off between rituals unless that has been planned
- Check the car before the varghodo: a safa needs more headroom than you expect
- Sit back carefully against headrests and chair backs
- In warm weather, drink water often and stay in the shade between rituals
Give every item an owner
Ask one friend to carry the talwar between rituals, another to hold the kit, and a family member to keep the shoes during the pheras. Fewer things go missing when each one belongs to someone.
After the celebration
Keep rented pieces together in one bag, and return them on the date agreed at booking. If you have questions about your safa or outfit, contact us or read about groom safas.
